Removal of strict restrictions in the second half of May

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has officially announced the new restrictive measures taken against COVID-19. In regard to the citizens, the Turkish president said that they would remove the quarantine if everything goes to plan after the end of the holy month of Ramadan in the second half of May.

WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE THE COUNTRY GOT HIT WITH THE CORONAVIRUS

As recalled a curfew was made for 31 provinces in Turkey from April 23, including the financial centre of Istanbul and the capital Ankara, to prevent the spread of COVID-19. All major cities are closed for entries/exits, and international flights are temporarily suspended.

However, restrictions have already been lifted in some provinces, including tourist Antalya and Mugla. Even though new cases of COVID-19 infection are still being detected in the country, the number is decreasing each day, but the number of people who have recovered is increasing.

Official statistics on the situation with coronavirus in Turkey on May 6, 2020:

  • Confirmed cases of infection 129,000
  • Recovered 73,285
  • Fatal outcomes 3579.

By order of local authorities, citizens under 20 and over 65 are banned from leaving their homes due to the risk of infection. But in the near future, the Turkish government will make changes.

FORECASTS FOR MAY

On Monday, May 4, at the end of his speech, Mr Erdogan is implying that we are slowly coming to the stages of returning to everyday life. Already this Sunday, May 10, older people from 65 years old will be able to go outside from 11:00 to 15:00. After, on May 13, teenagers under 14 years old are allowed to do the same, and from May 15 - on people aged 15-20.

Starting May 11, the Turkish authorities plan to open shopping, entertainment centres and hairdressers. Then restaurants and hotels will reopen.

In the future, the Turkish leadership will consider the gradual opening of international flights.
